On its sixth visit to Mexico, and its first trip to Puebla’s Autodromo Miguel E. Abad for the CBMM Niobium Puebla E-Prix Rounds 8 & 9, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship partnered with Colictivo Tomate and Comex on a striking art project, with the local community at its heart.
Formula E is commited to generating a long lasting, positive legacy in each of its host cities as a pillar of the championship’s Sustainability Programme, ensuring the series is a powerful force for accelerating change, both on and off-track.
In Puebla – a cultural hub teeming with talented artists, colourful artwork and striking murals – Formula E engaged with the Secretariat of Culture for the State of Puebla and community-led artist collective Colectivo Tomate in partnership with Comex to create a unique experience for the tens of thousands of visitors set to visit the circuit for their first taste of world class all-electric racing.
The initiative was carried out in support of local artists, designers and suppliers – opening up the opportunity for them to come together and put their stamp on an FIA World Championship event and to promote sustainable development practices.
The mural adds a splash of Mexican culture and vibrancy, spanning the entrance to the circuit and is all ready to greet the thousands of passionate and knowledgeable fans – set to be on-site at a Formula E race for the first time since Marrakesh in 2020.
"In such a difficult year, we're proud to be able to bring some colour and joy to the streets of the cities in which we race; and what better than to do it through art and with young, local artists. Mexican talent is unique and we must support it to spread that notion," said Alvaro Buenaventura, Director for Latin America of Formula E.
The project took in some 932 metres of walls around the Autodromo Miguel E. Abed, transforming the public space with a touch of Mexican culture and vitality adorning the entire entrance to the circuit. The initiative supports local artists, designers and suppliers by giving them the opportunity to make their mark.
The murals are based on emblematic natural and cultural elements of Puebla: ecology and the electric car as a symbol of the automotive future. The work was developed by Thaya, Amauri Esmarq, MAOM and Orbit, artists from the city of Puebla and Tlaxcala with the aim of boosting local artistic talent.
Guillermo Milano, Director of Colectivo Tomate, said: "We are convinced that art is a powerful tool for message positioning and social transformation. We are grateful that through this event of great international relevance, this socio-artistic work will serve to promote sustainable development as well as the state of Puebla itself far and wide."
Formula E works hand-in-hand with host cities on years-long community engagement programmes, engaging with those living in and around our host cities in order to better understand their needs and expectations – making sure the championship builds meaningful, inclusive projects that benefit those communities and spread the series’ sustainability message far and wide.
"It is an honor to be participants in projects generated through alliances between the government, private initiative and organized civil society, to exalt the culture and identity of Puebla and even more so being in the framework of a great international event such as Formula E, "said the Secretary of Culture of the State of Puebla, Sergio A. De la Luz Vergara Berdejo.
In addition to this project, Formula E is working with charity Con Ganas de Vivir, which supports children and families of lower income cancer patients. Con Ganas de Vivir harbours ambitions to improve cancer care in Mexico, giving patients a better chance in treating and living with the disease.
In Puebla, Formula E, alongside its teams and partners, has stepped in to ensure the charity has a prominent presence to highlight their good work in the Allianz e-Village. They combined to provide donations towards a new patient development centre, tickets to the Virtual Boss Emotion Club, grandstand tickets to Rounds 8 & 9 and some surprise phone calls to patients from BMW i Andretti Motorsport and DS TECHEETAH’s star drivers.
