Audi's electrifying tour of Berlin

When Formula E comes to town, it's always been a given that tens of thousands of Berliners make the short trip to the city's iconic Tempelhof Airport Circuit for their dose of electric street racing at one of the fans', and drivers', favourite events on the calendar. This year, circumstances meant that things would be different, but Audi made sure the locals wouldn't miss out entirely.

With Lucas di Grassi and new signing Rene Rast giving it their all at Tempelhof, Kelvin van der Linde was back at base on the simulator, racking up the virtual kilometres.

The South African sportscar racer was charged with the invaluable role of supporting Audi Sport ABT Schaffler's on-track efforts, lapping a cutting-edge virtual recreation of each of the three circuit layouts staged at the old airfield on the outskirts of the capital.

Just prior to the finale, Van der Linde, the team's pick back at the Marrakesh Rookie Test, took a break from the sim-rig to to get behind the wheel of the e-tron FE06 on Berlin's streets.

The tour took in all the landmarks, starting at Alexanderplatz, past the Reichstag, across Strasse des 17 Juni and on to Potsdamer Platz before reaching the Brandenburg Gate.

Van der Linde's outing wasn't the first time a Formula E car has mixed it with road traffic in the German capital, though.

Ahead of the 2018 Berlin E-Prix, Nico Rosberg demoed the Gen2 car in public, leaving surprised locals reaching for their smartphones - the German Formula 1 World Champion even stopping for a few in-car selfies at the traffic lights!

Delving back even further, our pre-Gen1 prototype took to the roads and roundabouts in Berlin and caused quite a stir back in 2013, supporting the announcement that Berlin would become a host city in the then-all-new electric street racing series' very first season.

That initial visit proved to be such a success that the city has been a staple on the Formula E ever since, with a unique atmosphere and thousands of passionate fans making it one of the highlights of the year for spectators, teams and drivers alike.
