Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler's Daniel Abt is keen to remain with the German squad on the eve of his home race despite an uncertain future.
On the eve of the 2019 BMW i Berlin E-Prix presented by CBMM Niobium, just one year on from his spectacular 'perfect' full-points race finish, Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler driver Daniel Abt is uncertain of his future in Formula E.
"I'm back in the same situation - I'm not quite sure what the situation is for next season," says Abt ahead of his home race at Berlin's historic Tempelhof Airport. Just one year ago, the 26-year-old driver was facing similar levels of uncertainty, until Team Principal Allan McNish confirmed Abt would remain with the team just weeks after his win in Berlin.
"I want to continue - I like being at Audi. I also want to stay in Formula E - for me, it's the only championship I want to race in.
"I still have to wait and see what the results are but I will need to know soon for myself - obviously, I can't wait for someone to say yes or no very late [in the season].
Currently ninth in the standings, Abt has scored points in all but two of the races this season, giving him a total of 59 - 11 points behind his teammate Lucas di Grassi. Together, the drivers have been with the Audi squad since the Championship's inception.
"I hope I stay at Audi but if not, then I need other options.
"I'm talking to other teams - not necessarily German teams - for me to have a backup or to have other options available. You never know what people decide, therefore you have to be prepared."
With the added pressure of his home race just hours away, Abt will once again be looking to make an impression here in Berlin.
"[last year] was incredible - it's impossible to top that."
"Now people think we can do it all over again but that's not the case - it's a big challenge."
